Mahler gave his symphony the title “Tragic,” but eventually withdrew it. Nevertheless, the titanic—and ultimately unsuccessful—struggle with fate is vividly depicted in the music. A harrowing opening march and relentless Scherzo point the way to a heartbreaking finale. Before calamity there is respite: a melodic idyll that soars to ecstatic heights.
