Sarah Manning's Harmonious Creature cd Release at Cornelia Street Cafe

Much of the work on Harmonious Creature was written in the company of owl, coyote, bear, porcupine and salamander while Manning was an October 2012 Fellow in Composition at the MacDowell Colony. Manning is the lone red fox atop a pile of shale on the outskirts of the urban landscape, her singular musical voice illustrating the contradiction of an artist drawn to the woods even as she feels the gaze of a thousand bright city lamps. The album's first track, "Copland on Cornelia Street", imagines the American composer checking out the downtown music scene after hours at the Cornelia Street Cafe and sets the tone for compositions that unite the small town and the metropolis. At the right moment, in the drone of Goldberger's guitar and the shouts of alto and viola over the formless form spun from Miller's drums and Hart's bass, you might just see the twitch of a white-tipped tail....
