The enchanting East African vocalist known as Somi weaves clever songwriting and electro-acoustic soundscapes to offer a glimpse into Africa's heart and future. In 2007, Somi’s Harmonia Mundi CD Red Soil In My Eyes made the Top Ten of the world music charts while she performed to audiences across four continents. In October 2009, Somi released her third album, If The Rains Come First (Obliqsound), which debuted at #2 on Billboard's World Music Chart with a wave of critical acclaim. The Boston Globe says Somi “glistens with the sheen of an almost impossibly perfect cosmopolitanism!” JazzTimes describes Somi’s style this way: “imagine the earthy gustiness of Nina Simone blended with the vocal beauty of Dianne Reeves.” These performances will be recorded for a future Live at Jazz Standard album release....
