Each year, the event draws an estimated XXX people – including families with children and couples of all ages looking for something fun but unusual to do – as well as others looking for an activity that promotes the arts while taking advantage of the last warm days of summer before cooler fall weather begins.
The jazz lineup will feature Sunnyside musicians and will begin with Vin Scialla & Eric Schugren's WakeUp!, hailed as “one of those surprises that jazz lovers live for” (according to the influential All About Jazz website). Following this act will be Street Beat Brass, whose lively New Orleans sound has been presented by the US Department of State on several international tours.
During the musical line-up, younger audience members can tap into their creativity to make music as well as cartoon-inspired arts and crafts – at booths led by Park volunteers.
Near sunset (approx. 7:30pm), a 90-minute selection of vintage cartoons from the collection of renowned Queens-based early animation collector, curator, and historian, Tommy Jose Stathes, will begin. The Flushing Remonstrance musical duo will perform their original live scores to several of the cartoons. The line-up includes “The Automatic Moving Company” (1912), “Spring Antics” (1932), “A Colour Box” (1935), “Polar Pals” (1939), and “Me Musical Nephews” (1942).
Cinema-style treats and sweets, including pizza, popcorn, and finger foods, and well as beer, wine, soft drinks, and other beverages, will be available for purchase. Pizza will be provided courtesy of Sunnyside Pizza, a popular pizzeria located at 4001 Queens Blvd, Sunnyside, NY 11104.
Attendees are asked to bring a chair(s) or blanket for seating.
In case of rain, the event will be moved to Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015 from 5:30-9 pm.
Sunnyside Gardens Park was founded in 1926 and today is one of only two privately run parks in New York City (the other is Gramercy Park). Proceeds will go towards covering the costs of the event and the not-for-profit park’s other programming.
