The Crow by Hand to Earth featuring Amalia Umeda
In a collaboration that crosses continents and cultures, Hand to Earth brings together traditional Australian Aboriginal song keepers and contemporary jazz musicians as it presents the North American premiere of The Crow, which traces the songline of the crow (waak waak) in remote northern Australia.
Daniel Wilfred sings in the Wagilak language, and his is the oldest continuously practised music tradition in the world. Sunny Kim sings in English and Korean intoning gestures that invoke raw elemental forces. Together they sing of the stars, of fire, and of the cooling rain against the drone of David Wilfred’s didgeridoo and atmospheres created by trumpeter and sound artist, Peter Knight, and clarinetist Aviva Endean who draw on the minimalism of Brian Eno and Jon Hassell to create a bed for these beautifully contrasting voices. For this special concert presentation of their new work, The Crow, the ensemble is joined by one of the rising stars of European jazz, Polish violinist, Amalia Umeda.
