AN EVENING OF NEW JAZZ AND INTERNATIONAL POETRY
The recently-founded revolutionary Jazz/New Music quartet THE RED MICROPHONE will head a bill at Shapeshifter Lab, the experimental music space in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Another feature of the evening will be the celebrated poet from Italy ERIKA DAGNINO on her latest US tour. The band will also be accompanying Ms. Dagnino during her opening set.

THE RED MICROPHONE is a NYC-based ensemble of seasoned improvisational musicians who engage in ongoing progressive arts activism. The influence of earlier revolutionary cultural workers is brought to light in the quartet’s performance through sound, statement and intent. The band recently performed at ABC No Rio and the Brecht Forum and can be heard on the December 2012 IFAR Compilation; they have also recorded their debut CD, ‘The Red Microphone Speaks’, which will be available shortly. At Shapeshifter Lab the ensemble will present a set with works of Hanns Eisler, Pierre Degeytor and seldom-heard 1930s composer Janet Barnes, pieces dedicated to the likes of Paul Robeson, and performances inclusive of the prose of Langston Hughes, John Howard Lawson and others....
