Ready to Drink: Bar Henry Opens with Wine in Mind
Located in what its owner terms “the last legal cellar in Manhattan”, it can easily be found by the distinctive neon sign at sidewalk level. A few steps down stairs, and patrons will find themselves enveloped in an evocation of old New York.
A century-old mahogany American bar from a Cold Spring Harbor tavern dominates the bar at the front of the house. The floor is black and white Italian marble, the room lit by vintage brass chandeliers. Past the bar and the compact, lively kitchen, guests are welcomed into a cozy dining room with polished wood floors, brick walls and a gleaming copper ceiling. Bar Henry accommodates 35 patrons in the dining room and 30 at bar tables at the entrance.

Bar Henry offers top-notch New York bistro fare with authentic European touches. The menu features classic entrees: Dry Aged Ribeye, Hamburger Henry, Heritage Chicken Under A Brick, and Short Rib Corn Taco. Desserts are house made, including Apple Tarte Tatin and Chocolate Mousse; simple and satisfying. At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Cosme Aguilar. Bar Henry also offers a discerning beer selection and old-school signature cocktails named for significant New York Henrys.
Bar Henry prides itself on one of the finest and best-priced wine lists available in a Manhattan bistro. Our customers are offered at least 100 tasting choices, including wines by the glass, half-bottle selections, and a unique option to buy half of any of the whole bottles on the market list for just half the price of the bottle. Some of the best reserves can be had for less than $100. The wine collection at Bar Henry showcases old world wines, off-the-beaten-path, new world, and affordable wines, with special emphasis on the classic wines of France, Italy, Germany and Austria. All wines are at their peak according to age, a “ready-to-drink” philosophy championed by sommelier Ryan Hodges and wine buyer John Slover, who has worked with owner Winston Kulok for a decade.
With its definitive bistro menu skillfully rendered, its exemplary list of wines at remarkable value, in a beautifully restored, historic Greenwich Village location, run by an accomplished staff, Bar Henry is certain to be a leader in the ongoing New York bar-bistro renaissance.
