Petr Cancura's Crossroads, featuring Lynn Miles at TD Ottawa Winter Jazz Festival at National Arts Centre

Imagine one of Canada’s best singer-songwriters walking on down the road, when up jumps a stranger with a saxophone at the crossroads where folk and jazz meet. That’s the general idea behind Petr Cancura’s Crossroads, presented by the NAC. The project an opportunity to consider the work of a major talent through a new jazz lens, as Cancura reconfigures songs from each artist’s back catalogue to unearth unheard rhythm, swing and spaces for improvisation.

The TD Ottawa Winter Jazz Festival is pleased to co-present the second Crossroads concert featuring Lynn Miles. Miles’ music makes being “forlorn feel like a state of grace" (The New York Times). Over the course of her 13 LPs she has collected numerous accolades, including three Canadian Folk Music Awards and a Juno. Noted for her sharp lyrics and the extraordinary melancholy her voice is capable of summoning, Miles has drawn comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell and enjoys a strong following in both Canada and the United States....

Saxophonist Petr Cancura is the perfect musician to find the jazz potential in her tunes. Currently artist in residence at Carleton University and Programming Manager at the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival, Cancura was recently nominated for a Juno for his Down Home project, which crosses jazz with roots and blues influences. He’ll be leading a band that also includes one of Canada’s most acclaimed guitarists in Roddy Ellias, rising star Greg Ritchie on drums and versatile double bass player John Geggie.
