Biguine Extension was born as part of the artist residency carried out as a duo by guitarist
Ralph Lavital and bassist Elvin Bironien at the Tropiques Atrium national theater in Martinique
during the 2023/2024 season. The name of the project is not accidental and refers directly to the
work of pianist Alain Jean Marie and his series of albums Biguine Reflections.
The aim is to continue the work of modernizing, updating, and passing on the
well-known and lesser-known repertoire of the leading songwriters of biguine, in the broadest sense
of the term, through a reinterpretation that includes aesthetic and harmonic influences linked to
our era, as well as arrangement and composition work.
After an initial phase of work, the duo is joined by percussionist Adriano Tenorio, who
will be an integral part of the project. This unique trio brings together for the first time these three musicians from
the Parisian scene, who have been very active in recent years and regularly collaborate on various
musical projects. The combination of these identities is rich in sharing, full of freshness and
intensity...

The desire to highlight not only the instrumental aspect but also the song-based and popular side of this
musical genre in its original form opens up the possibility for the trio to invite singers to join them.
Oscillating between Caribbean traditions and a
totally contemporary jazz aesthetic, this trio with its unique sound has made the biguine repertoire its own.
A repertoire that spans generations, a repertoire that is still to be built...
just as this “extension” proposes.

Biguine extension est né dans le cadre de la résidence d'artistes effectuée en duo par le guitariste

Ralph Lavital et le bassiste Elvin Bironien à la scène nationale Tropiques Atrium de Martinique

saison 2023 / 2024. Le nom du projet ne doit rien au hasard et s'inscrit directement en référence au

travail du pianiste Alain Jean Marie et sa série d'albums Biguine Reflections.

La démarche vise à poursuivre le travail de modernisation, de mise à jour, et de transmission du

répertoire connu et moins connu des auteurs-compositeurs phares de la biguine, dans le sens large

du terme, à travers une ré-interprétation incluant des influences esthétiques et harmoniques liées à

notre époque, ainsi qu'un travail d'arrangement et de composition.

Après une première phase de travail, le duo est rejoint par le percussionniste Adriano Tenorio qui

fera partie intégrante du projet. Ce trio inédit regroupe pour la première fois ces trois musiciens de

la scène parisienne, très actifs ces dernières années, qui se côtoient régulièrement dans divers

projets musicaux. La réunion de ces identités est riche en partage, pleine de fraicheur et

d'intensité ...

Le souhait de mettre en avant, en plus de la partie instrumentale, le coté chanson et populaire de ce

courant musical dans sa forme originelle, ouvre la possibilité au trio d'inviter des chanteuses ou

chanteurs. Oscillant entre l'ancrage des traditions caribéennes et une

esthétique jazz totalement actuelle, ce trio au son unique s'approprie le répertoire biguine.

Un répertoire qui traverse les générations, un répertoire qu'il reste encore à bâtir ...
