About

One of France's most singular jazz saxophonists, guided by his passion for surfing and his love of the ocean, Samy Thiébault's latest album “In Waves” (2024) is a grandiose work of elevation, fantasy and allegory. The vision of an accomplished artist in the form of an initiatory Odyssey, carried by one of the most daring and creative bands of the moment, and backed by critical and public support that continues to grow year after year... For his carte blanche at 38Riv, the leading saxophonist presents us with a dedicated version of this repertoire, rearranged around a more acoustic proposition than the one with which he tours festivals.‘The material is opulent, full of life (...) with reminiscences of oceanic mythologies and ancestral animisms (...) the album draws a solar force from it’. TéléramaOver the past two decades, Samy Thiébault has established himself as one of the leading voices on the French jazz scene. Inspired by Creolisation, classical music, spirituality and travel, he has built up an ambitious body of work, somewhere between introspection and openness to the world (‘Caribbean Stories’, ‘Symphonic Tales’, ‘Awé!’). His latest project, ‘In Waves’, explores a more acoustic, poetic and engaged dimension around the ocean. Acclaimed by the critics (TSF, Jazz News, Télérama...), he plays on major stages all over the world. Winner of the France Musique/Sacem 2023 prize, he is also a teacher and composer for dance, film and theatre.Carte blanche - a laboratory of creationSince 2022, 38Riv has been opening its doors to artists in search of freedom. On four evenings, the same stage is given over to creativity, where emerging and established artists weave new stories together. Here, people don't just come to play, they come to explore, invent, invite and share. Projects in gestation, unforeseen encounters, creations on the verge of fruition - all precious moments to be experienced as the concerts unfold. Naïssam Jalal, Abdullah Miniawy, Camille Maussion, Richard Sears... voices that have already left their mark on this ever-evolving venue, with more to come....
