An out-of-format concert to see further afield, with the powerfully spiritual music of South African pianist Nduduzo Makhathini and the transatlantic bridge imagined by the ConstelNation quintet, featuring Magic Malik and Angel Bat Dawid. 1/ Nduduzo MakhathiniIn the space of ten years, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini has established himself as one of today's greats, at the forefront of the revival of spiritual jazz, which he explores in a personal and informed way. In the uMgungundlovu district of eastern South Africa, where he grew up, Zulu traditions have long linked music, healing and spiritual practices. Attending various churches and then listening to records by John Coltrane's classic quartet - featuring the master McCoy Tyner - have also shaped his playing and powerful style. Spotted in 2016 with Shabaka and The Ancestors, the pianist has since joined the Blue Note label, where his last three critically acclaimed albums have been released - including uNomkhubulwane in 2024. An ambitious three-movement suite where piano, voice, drums and double bass carry legends, history, memory and traces of ancient rituals.2/ ConstelNationAngel Bat Dawid, Magic Malik, Richard Comte, Nick Macri & Toma GoubandSince 2013, The Bridge network has been organizing new forms of cooperation between French and North American musicians - particularly those from the vibrant Chicago scene. Nearly 140 instrumentalists, divided into quartets or quintets, benefit from an invaluable luxury: the long time of exchanges and creation, concretized by tours on both continents. The ConstelNation quintet brings together Chicago-based double bassist Nick Macri and clarinettist, pianist and vocalist Angel Bat Dawid, with three French musicians: flutist Magic Malik, guitarist Richard Comte and drummer Toma Gouband.
