Deric Dickens is a Brooklyn-based percussionist and composer. After growing up in Southern Georgia, Deric worked as a band director, taught drum and bugle corps, and played as a principal timpanist with local orchestras and symphonies. But it was the ride cymbal, a friend had asked him to play at a session, that changed everything. Since, Dickens has toured and recorded with Robinella (Columbia Records) and JaLaLa (Janis Siegel Manhattan Transfer). Deric has performed numerous times with Donald Brown, Jerry Coker, Kirk Knuffke, and Jeff Lederer at various clubs and festivals including Birdland, 55 Bar, Bonnaroo, Bristol Rhythm and Roots, Atlas Performing Arts, Knoxville Jazz Festival, Litchfield Jazz Festival, and The Muroran Jazz Festival Japan. He currently leads his groups Speed Date, Rocket #9, The Dickens Campaign, and Left Bomb Bay and co leads Dix Out (avant Trad. Band), Team Players, and Arabic for Beginners with Lena Bloch.
They are performing tonight with Kenny Warren (trumpet) & Matt Engle (bass). This tour celebrates the release of cd paying homage to the great Jimmy Lyons

QD: Quinn Dougherty is a composer, a lefty, and a depressoid and I'd love to learn more about the sound in my head. I compose scores for cinematographer Carman Spoto, current feature phaesporiamovie.com, premiere TBD. I build space ships with rhythmician Alex Kulick. My collaborations with the visual artist Christina McPhee have been presented by the Babel Working Group in Santa Barbara and in Philadelphia. A piece of mine was once featured on the Muddle Instead of Music podcast. My last gesamtkunstwerk "Francis & The Wolf" premiered in West Chester PA in 2013. In May of 2014 I delivered a paper on paranoia, noise, and electrical cables at the New School's Center for Transformative Media. I have a BFA from Cooper Union and a PHD in Composition from the University of Pennsylvania. This summer I will premiere pieces by Ryan Fellhauer and Jesse Austin in Philadelphia. The Fringe Festival of 2015 will exhibit a new play called "Second Skull", it will be a picture of the social brain of freedom. Second Skull is with the collaboration of performers Chris Schelb, Alize Rozsnyai, Carman Spoto, Arazel, Ryan Fellhauer, Zac Davis, and Alex Kulick; setting texts by Lszl Krasznahorkai, Laboria Cuboniks, Mumia Abu Jamal, and others. Mumia's health is in a severe condition, visit prisonradio.org to learn more and join his supporters. No execution by medical neglect, free him now!
