A cooperative and trans-national trio, Weird of Mouth brings together the Danish-born, Norway-based alto saxophonist “Chu Berry 28” with pianist Craig Taborn and drummer Ches Smith, both longtime New Yorkers. “Berry” works on exploring the natural rawness of her instrument – experimenting on what the saxophone is capable of in sound and expression, with and without preparations. She has performed with the likes of Alan Silva, Chris Corsano, Ståle Liavik Solberg, and the Fire! Orchestra. Hailed by The New York Times as “one of the best jazz pianists alive,” Craig Taborn has played and recorded with such luminaries as Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Lester Bowie, Dave Holland, Tim Berne, John Zorn, Evan Parker, Steve Coleman, David Torn, Chris Potter, William Parker, Vijay Iyer, Kris Davis, and many others. Ches Smith has collaborated with a host of artists on many scenes since the early 2000s, including Marc Ribot, Tim Berne, John Zorn, Darius Jones, David Torn, John Tchicai, Nels Cline, Mary Halvorson, Trevor Dunn, Terry Riley, Kris Davis, Dave Holland, Secret Chiefs 3, Xiu Xiu, Good for Cows, Theory of Ruin, and Mr. Bungle, among others. He has nine records to his name and is a devout student of Haitian Vodou drums, performing in religious and folkloric contexts in New York and Haiti for the last decade.
