Alex Yuwen has been playing saxophone for four years and currently studies with Eric Rasmussen. A recent graduate of Santan Junior High, he will be attending Hamilton High School in the fall. Alex is a member of Young Sounds of Arizona’s 7 O’Clock Band under the direction of Vince Wedge. In addition, he serves as principal clarinetist of the Phoenix Youth Symphony’s Symphonette Orchestra. Alex was recently a featured soloist at Arizona Musicfest. He also placed first in the Phoenix Youth Symphony Young Musicians Competition Junior Division....

Alex Yuwen has been playing saxophone for four years and currently studies with Eric Rasmussen. A recent graduate of Santan Junior High, he will be attending Hamilton High School in the fall. Eric Rasmussen is Director of Instrumental Music at Scottsdale Community College. The California native spent ten years playing and teaching in New York City where he was a staple of the jazz community, performing regularly on the East Coast as well as throughout Europe. He earned his BFA from the California Institute of the Arts and his Masters of Music degree in Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory in Boston.

Catch a Rising Star Series: This summer concert series features performances by young artists based in Arizona. Curated by the Nash, the series provides a platform for these emerging artists to gain prominence in the jazz community. The 2013 series features headliners of from the ages of 12-26. This year, the Catch a Rising Stars is very much an educational program as well as a performance series. All Catch a Rising Stars groups will be offered a free clinic by an experienced local jazz educator in advance of their performance at the Nash.
