About

Esteban is one of the few remaining classically trained students of the virtuoso guitarist Andrés Segovia. Born Stephen Paul in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Esteban began teaching himself guitar when he was eight years old. He later graduated from Carnegie Mellon University, majoring in guitar and English literature, and spent four years studying with Segovia intermittently in Spain, where the young guitarist immersed himself in flamenco clubs and Spanish classical music.
After receiving an endorsement from Segovia in 1978, Esteban returned to the United States and began touring. One year later, he was hit by a speeding drunk driver and lost the ability to play guitar because of damage to his left arm and hand.
