Perhaps not as well known as Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, or Gary Burton, Hutcherson's influence, particularly in the post-bop, fusion, and avant-garde styles of jazz, is strongly felt and there is a solid body of recordings from Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch (1964), the Hutcherson led effort Stick-Up! In addition to his playing style, which he also expanded to include extensive use of the marimba, he separated himself from his peers by also being a talented composer; much of his most prominent work is of his own compositions. Tonight we will pay tribute to Hutcherson the player and composer while taking this opportunity to explore the range of great tunes that he has left behind.
