In 1979 Alden moved east with vibraphone legend Red Norvo. In New York Alden’s skills were quickly sought out by a glittering array of jazz stars, including Joe WIlliams, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, as well as pop/rock icon Steve Miller and Jay Geils. Howard’s playing for Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown” sparked a worldwide Gypsy Jazz revival. And genre-defying guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke has this to say about “Guitar” , Howard’s recent solo recording on K2B2 records; “It’s the best recording of the seven-string guitar I’ve ever heard!” In 2009 DOWNBEAT magazine named Howard “a Modern Maestro”, one of the 75 Greatest Guitarists of all time. Allen Ames grew up in Phoenix and began playing the violin at age nine, studying with iconic Phoenix teacher Max Mandel. At the University of Arizona he studied with Theodora McMillan and James Buswell. He was apprenticed to Carl E. Reiter as a violin maker and has created the five-string “Contralto Violin” and the six-string “Violira.” He also plays guitar, bass and drums. Instilled with a love of both jazz and classical music from an early age, Allen has maintained parallel careers, playing with freelance orchestras and chamber ensembles, as well as many of Phoenix’s top jazz artists.
