Inspired by events of Shange's own life, it became the second play by a Black woman to reach Broadway. The 1976 production premiered Sep 15 at Booth Theatre in New York and prior to that at The Public Theatre in June. It ran until July 1978 for 742 shows and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. It has been adapted as a book, a 1982 television film and a 2010 theatrical film.
