Born August 25, 1933, he came to prominence in the late 1950s, as a saxophonist and primary composer for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Shorter joined Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet in the1960s but soon began recording with his own bands—each project filled with new and inspiring compositions that often pushed the envelope of mainstream jazz. One of these was the jazz fusion group, Weather Report. Many of his compositions have subsequently become jazz standards and have been performed by jazz’s top artists, including Herbie Hancock, Joe Lovano, Stan Getz, Fred Hersch and Freddie Hubbard. Superstition Jazz Orchestra, based at Phoenix College and under the direction of Mike Crotty, is a group of professional and community jazz musicians.
