What were the odds that a piano player would be blessed with 2 sons who play bass and drums? That is the case for pianist Joel Robin (Goldenthal) and his sons – bassist Adrian and drummer Julian. Both sons grew up exposed to dad’s rehearsals with the likes of Francine Reed and gravitated toward the music. At the age of 9, Julian subbed on an afternoon concert gig with Francine’s band because the group’s regular drummer was unavailable. Tony Vacca will join the trio at the October 19th Jazz in AZ party, which will feature several of Tony’s original tunes from his CD, “Three-Point Landing,” a couple of Joel’s originals, and a rendition of a relatively obscure favorite Mike Mainieri tune that Joel and Tony first played together in the early 80s, “I’m Sorry.” The trio will play its version of Pat Metheny’s “Phase Dance.” Plus there will be melodic treatments of many standards.

“There is nothing in the world like playing jazz with your sons,” Joel remarks. “We are one.” With the addition of Joel’s long-time musical friend Tony Vacca, this party promises to be an especially satisfying experience.
