The group The New Vanguard is molded after the seminal local ensemble run by Phoenix drummer Dave Cook. Dave was famous for mentoring young players in the community, and the Monday jam session he ran for 10 years with the group at The Melody Lounge was a pillar in the Valley’s jazz scene. Before his passing, Dave willed the book for The New Vanguard to Ted Sistrunk. Since then, Ted has been moving the hand-written charts (written by Prince Shell) into modern notation software, and generally rebuilding the book. In the spirit of Dave Cook’s mentoring principle, Re: New Vanguard was created. Featuring some of the best young lions, this hard-bop combo is thrilling!
