Willie Jones III is one of the world’s top jazz drummers, known both for his distinct style of rhythmic expression and for honoring monumental influences such as Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, and Billy Higgins. Jones has a storied background as a sideman with artists including Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, and Kurt Elling; but for the past couple of decades he’s also been producing records—both his own and those of notable contemporaries—on his WJ3 label, with a strong emphasis on swing and traditional jazz rhythms.
