About

Eric Felten is “one of the best trombonists in jazz,” Doug Ramsey declares at his Rifftides blog. Not long after Felten graduated from Arizona State University, the International Trombone Association recognized Felten with the Frank Rosolino award for best new trombonist. He has recorded 7 CDs as a leader, discs that feature many of the finest musicians in jazz, including Joshua Redman and Mingus alum Jimmy Knepper [T-Bop], Joe Lovano, Bob Mintzer, and Randy Brecker [Gratitude]; Jack Sheldon and Herb Geller [Eric Felten Meets the Dek-Tette]; Kenny Barron and Jimmy Cobb [Seize the Night]. He has been recognized not only for his instrumental chops but for his singing: All About Jazz praises Felten as “A crooner who also plays a mean trombone and does both equally well.” Based in Washington, DC, Felten also leads a repertory big band. The New York Times raved that the Eric Felten Jazz Orchestra’s performance of Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite was “great music.” His concert special for public television, “The Big Band Sound of WWII” was seen on PBS stations nationwide. He has also been featured in the Kennedy Center All-Star Big Band. Eric Felten comes from a musical Phoenix family. His father, Les Felten, Jr., was a first-call lead trumpet player in the Valley, and a teacher who inspired generations of Arizona musicians.
