Brooklyn-based vocalist, improviser and composer Kristin Slipp is among the most creative emerging artists today. A Maine native, Slipp has performed all around North America and Europe, and has been privileged to share stages and studios with a wide number of musicians including Ran Blake, Fred Frith, Dagmar Krause, Zeena Parkins, Carla Kihlstedt, and Greg Saunier (Deerhoof). The Allan Chase Quartet with guest vocalist Kristin Slipp
Allan Chase (alto and baritone saxophones)
Phil Grenadier (trumpet)
Bruno Råberg (bass)
Austin McMahon (drums)
with special guest Kristin Slipp (voice)
Saxophonist Allan Chase has led his two-horn quintets since his debut recording as a leader, Dark Clouds with Silver Linings (Accurate Records, 1994). The group explores classic jazz compositions, drawing inspiration from the cool counterpoint, blend, and conciseness of the Gerry Mulligan and Jimmy Giuffre quartets on one hand, and the adventurous improvisation of Sonny Rollins' quartet with Don Cherry on the other.
With guest vocalist Kristin Slipp, the group will perform a selection of standards -- some of the less often heard ones -- and new acoustic arrangements of a handful of psychedelic and art-rock songs by Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd and Robert Wyatt of Soft Machine.
Allan Chase is a saxophonist, composer and jazz educator who is featured on over 40 CDs with artists including Lewis Nash, Stanley Cowell, Rashied Ali, John McNeil, Joe Morris, Gunther Schuller, John Zorn, Your Neighborhood Saxophone Quartet, and his wife, jazz vocalist/composer Dominique Eade. Chase currently chairs the Ear Training department at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and is a former chair of jazz studies at New England Conservatory. He was born in Connecticut and grew up in Phoenix.
Trumpeter Phil Grenadier recently toured the world with John Scofield, along with bassist Steve Swallow, culminating in a sold-out Carnegie Hall performance. He appears on over 50 CDs with such artists as Kenny Barron, Chris Potter, Larry Goldings, and his brother, bassist Larry Grenadier. A native of San Francisco who began playing professionally at 16, Phil has been a leading voice in New England's jazz scene since moving to the Boston area in the 1990s.
Bassist Bruno Råberg grew up on a farm in Sweden, but by the age of 20 he was touring the world with Swedish jazz trombone virtuoso Eje Thelin's trio. Bruno moved to Boston to attend New England Conservatory, and has been a faculty member at Berklee since the mid-1980s. A prolific composer and bandleader, he has produced six CDs of his original music for trio, quartet, and nonet. He tours Japan regularly as a member of the Tiger Okoshi Quintet and has played with a variety of artists at festivals in the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Central and South America.
Drummer Austin McMahon is one of Boston's most creative and versatile drummers and percussionists. He performs weekly as a member of Jerry Bergonzi's quartet and has recorded and/or performed with George Garzone, Joe Lovano, and Ben Monder. He has released two award-winning CDs of original compositions with his own band.
