Portland Jazz Festival Features Azar Lawrence - "Ole Coltrane" - Two Show Times 7:30 & 10:00 pm
Azar Lawrence is the most important - post Coltrane - saxophonist to emerge from the LA scene since Dexter Gordon. Lawrence served important apprenticeships with Trane's drummer and pianist Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner. Lawrence has also worked over the years with Frank Zappa, Horace Tapscott and Woody Shaw. Ultimately, he heeded the call to join Elvin's Jazz Machine in New York. While there he participated in a legendary album for Miles Davis (text taken from PDX Jazz web site).
For "Ole Coltrane", the Portland Jazz Festival has invited Azar Lawrence to explore Latin influences in Coltrane's music. Azar tapped Oregon Hall of Fame Inductee and Latin Jazz Band Leader Bobby Torres to gather together top caliber musicians who could help Azar explore "Ole Coltrane". Jazz Aficionados and the Coltrane-Curious will want to be sure to catch this promising evening of music featuring Azar Lawrence and local musical heavy weights: Bobby Torres, Gary Hobbs, Dan Gaynor, Tim Gilson, and Dick Titterington....
