The album’s title references the “Burned-Over District” of 19th-century New York, a hotbed of religious revivalism and utopian movements. That tension between revelation and danger runs through Burnover, from the stormy opener “Point and Shoot” to the explosive “Gone (Can Mean a Lot of Things).”
Freeman recorded the album in Burlington, VT, with producer Benny Yurco and his live band, aiming for dynamic, guitar-forward arrangements. Some of the most striking moments come when the formula shifts, like the piano-led “Curtain,” which evolved from a guitar jam into a vibrant, emotional centerpiece.
Despite its raw power, Burnover is full of beauty and intimacy. Tracks like “Gallic Shrug” and “Salesman” reflect Freeman’s poetic voice, set against layered instrumentation including horns, pedal steel, and rich harmonies. The album’s characters are searchers, trying to find meaning in a place that feels both familiar and unknowable.
Though Burnover deals with feeling like an outsider, it’s also a testament to Freeman’s creative community in Vermont. By involving close friends in its recording, he shaped a collection that’s immediate, textured, and emotionally resonant. “I really just wanted there to be as many things to hold onto as you can,” he says.
