Sunset Valley:Herman Jolly, Jonathan Drews (Eyelids) and Eric Furlong formed the trio Sunset Valley in 1996, drawing from influences like Pixies, The Cars, Gary Newman, and the Monkees. With sci-fi lyrics, wordplay twists and infectious beats, they came out of the gate hot with their first album, The New Speed, on Chicago label Sugarfree. Produced and mixed by the bay area’s Jeff Saltzman, they quickly lit the I-5 corridor on fire with instant crowd favorites and college airplay. When major label internal structures imploded as was the fad in 2000, tour mates Death Cab For Cutie led the way for Seattle’s Barsuk Records to pick them up and release another rock masterpiece, Ice Pond. Having working industry producers in the band caused multiple line-up shifts and a lack of national touring, but also made them focus more on the art of recording. All five members remained friends and came together for occasional reunion shows, and this seven year break they just took is the longest one yet. ...
