JIŘÍ STIVÍN deals with the interpretation of pre-classical music on the flute since 1975. He studied the cinematography at FAMU, after graduating, he devoted himself exclusively to music. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. His flute teachers were Milan Muncingler (Ars Rediviva) and Jiří War (Czech Philharmonic). Stivín performs music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He has recorded concertos for flute (4 CD Vivaldi, Telemann). Mastered all kinds of transverse flutes and recorders. Apart from music, he is also involved in jazz, composing and improvisational New Music, using saxophone, clarinet, transverse flute, recorder flute. He also use several kinds of folk whistles. As a soloist, he works with renowned orchestras (Virtuosi di Praga, the Prague Symphony Orchestra, Slovak Chamber Orchestra, Prague Madrigalists, Due Boemi, Suk Chamber Orchestra, Talich Quartet, etc.), manages his own ensembles Collegium Quodlibet and George Stivín and Co Jazz Quartet. He performs at solo recitals with harpsichord, organ, guitar, or playing alone aor with a tape recorder. For over ten years, he has concerts each season at the Prague Symphony Orchestra concert series called "flutes of all kinds." Hismusical style is characterized by effervescence, improvisation, frequent switching between different musical styles. He played in a rock band SPUTNICI, he was member of a drama ensemble of the Karlin Musical Theatre. However, his main subject is jazz. Together with Martin Kratochvil they founded Jazz ensemble Q in the sixties. Within the one-year stay in London, he studied the Royal Academy of Music. After his return to Czechoslovakia he founded Stivín & Co.. Jazz system. From 1970 to 1973 he was a member, soloist and finally a conductor of dramatic orchestra of the National Theatre in Prague. In the eighties, he worked primarily as a soloist with many participating in his own and other musical projects. His double album Trips in 1981 was ranked among the most notable projects of European jazz. Since the eighties he is focussed on the operation of classical music compositions, he specializes in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. In this area, he gained experience thanks to Milan Munclinger who taught Stivín flute and introduced him to the pre-classical interpretive practice. Since the mid-eighties also teaches at the Prague Conservatory, where he teaches the flute. He is also involved in music for film and theater. On 28 October 2007 the President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus awarded him with National Order of Merit by the state in the field of culture and art.
When preparing for the International Jazz Festival in Prague in 1988, Jiří Stivín was asked to appearance before Chick Corea and his Electric Band. Along with Jarda Šindler, Frantisek Uhlir and Cyril Zeleňák quartet assembled for the occasion and arranged folk songs. As the combination of musicians and performances seemed well made, continued with this quartet in concerts both in Prague and foreign jazz clubs. Later also in other international jazz festivals.
