Dave returned to his native Rhode Island making a name for himself performing with the legendary Bobby Greene, vocalist Semenya McCord, and Herb King’s Hemisphere Ensemble. His appearances at the Fishmonger have included well-known pianists Mike Renzi, Frank Wilkins and Paul Nagel as well as top drummers Royal Hartigan and long time friend Steve Langone. When not performing in the top clubs in New England and New York, Dave teaches at Brown University and the University of Rhode Island.
Pianist arranger Paul Nagel grew up in California backing artists such as Jimmy Witherspoon, Charlie Musselwhite, Chuck Berry, Joe Henderson, Sonny Stitt and Ray Brown. After moving to the Bay area in the late 70s, Paul played with Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Sonny Stitt, Hadley Kaliman, Ray Obiedo, Larry Schenider, Larry Grenadier, and Glenn Chronkite.
He met vocalist Bobby McFerrin in the early 80s and performed with him regularly at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, as well as opening for Chick Corea for the first annual KJAZ Jazz Festival at Davies Hall. In 1982, he joined sax player and vocalist Cornelius Bumpus and recorded the albums Clear View and Beacon followed by a national tour. Paul rejoined Bobby McFerrin in 1993 forming the band “Bang! Zoom!” which played clubs and major festivals including Montreux, North Sea, Monterey, Istanbul, Madrid and Vienna. “Bang! Zoom!” also performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Israeli Philharmonic and the National Symphony. Paul also plays Rhodes piano on Bobby’s “Bang! Zoom!” Blue Note recording released in 1995.
He met singer/guitarist Boz Scaggs while doing a demo with Cornelius Bumpus and the two worked together on standards from the Great American Songbook culminating in a CD But Beautiful - Standards Vol.1 with Paul as pianist and arranger. The CD debuted #1 on the Billboard Jazz Charts followed by touring with Scaggs, NLS, vocalist Monet and saxophonist Eric Crystal throughout the world. Paul joined Boz’s “Hit’s” band in ’04 and toured throughout the U.S. and Japan through ’08. Paul remains an active performer in New England perming with John Allmark, Greg Abate, Dan Moretti, Dave Zinno, Phil Grenadier, Steve DeConti, Marty Ballou, Dick Lupino, George Masso and many others.
