Father’s Day Jazz Concert

Jazz fans and families will want to mark their calendars for the third annual Paul Montgomery Memorial Father’s Day Jazz Concert on Sunday, June 15, at 6:30 pm at the Raleigh Little Theatre Scottie Stevenson Amphitheatre. (rainsite; inside the Raleigh Little Theatre) The concert is dedicated to the memory of Paul Montgomery, a longtime musician in the Raleigh area and beloved “Uncle Paul” of WRAL.
In keeping with the family focus of the celebration, the concert will bring together student and veteran jazz musicians to play tunes from “Uncle Paul’s” favorite repertoire. Paul’s daughter, Kathy Montgomery Gelb will be the featured vocalist plus the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble which are directed by Mr. Montgomery’s son-in-law, Dr. Gregg Gelb. Special guests for the concert are the Second Line Stompers, a New Orleans style jazz ensemble including players who used to play in groups with Uncle Paul. The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble is proud to be an ensemble of the Philharmonic Association based in Raleigh. TYJE is for advanced musicians in grades 8 - 12 who want to develop the skills to perform a wide range of jazz compositions. Membership is by audition. The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra is a non-profit group of musicians from across the Triangle who since 1991 have shared their love of big band jazz with audiences throughout the Triangle including twenty plus years of presenting nationally known guest artists at the Temple Theatre in Sanford.
