Since 1990, the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra has played for thousands of jazz enthusiasts around North Carolina at schools, artscenters, festivals, dances, and more. The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra originated as the “Community Jazz Ensemble” in 1990 when Gregg Gelb was a Visiting Artist at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, NC. In September 1994, the Jazz Society was granted tax-exempt status 501(c)(3).More than 50 well-known National and Regional guest artists have performed at the Jazz Society’s Temple Theatre series in Sanford.
the orchestra’s repertoire reflects a wide range of Big Band Jazz styles and arrangements. Included are classics such as Two O’clock Jump, Stompin’ at the Savoy and so many other Big Band favorites but the band also plays mnay original arrangements by Paul Kelly and Gregg Gelb and these arrangements are featured on its CD "Jazz Encounters"....

The Father's Day Jazz concert will be a tribute to the late great jazz pianist 'Uncle' Paul Montgomery who was also a famous Raleigh radio and TV entertainer . We will play music that Paul could play the heck out of: music by Mount Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich and we will feature
feature the fine singing of Paul's daughter Kathy Montgomery Gelb and Pauls grandson Chris Gelb who plays drums.
