This program explores the similarities between the visual arts and jazz of the 20th century. Painters from around the world found new artistic expression through the alteration and exaggeration of form, materials, color, and texture. The jazz artists of the mid-20th century invented new modes of composition and improvisation. Quartet leader Gelb pairs jazz compositions by Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, and Thelonious Monk with works of art by Jacob Lawrence, Andrew Wyeth, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Lyonel Feininger, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Gerhard Richter, El Anatsui, and Mickalene Thomas....
