Although Cressman is widely known for touring with Phish’s Trey Anastasio, her work as bandleader allows her to continue to diversify and expand her musical universe. Cressman says, “I would really love for anyone to listen to my music and find something to relate to…I find myself between two worlds with the music that I’m writing; it’s not bread and butter jazz but it’s not wholly anything else either.” Hailing from an illustrious musical family, the San Francisco–raised instrumentalist and chanteuse has been a part of the Bay Area’s vibrant music scene since the young age of 14, when she began subbing for her father, Santana trombonist Jeff Cressman. She went on to study on full scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. In addition to joining the Trey Anastasio Band 5 years ago, Cressman has performed with many other renowned and distinguished artists such as Nicholas Payton, Wycliffe Gordon, and Peter Apfelbaum. Taking inspiration from those bandleaders’ boundary-blurring approaches during her time as a sideman, Cressman’s own work as a bandleader reveals her to be an utterly contemporary artist steeped in several traditions, an artist who sees no barriers between the accomplishments of the past and the urgent demands of the present.

Together with her talented band members, Cressman draws inspiration from a broad range of styles, bridging the gap between musical worlds and creating a sonic landscape that is all their own. By weaving the spontaneity of improvised music with songwriting forms, Cressman creates a tapestry of sound that touches on indie rock, jazz, R&B, and world music, but knows no boundaries. The ensemble, of which Cressman’s highly expressive voice on trombone and crystalline singing voice are the shining stars, will perform songs from her second album, Turn the Sea, as well as newer material from her forthcoming EP.
