BONNIE BARNETT, vocalist, composer and improviser, resides in Los Angeles. She has been exploring the texts of Gertrude Stein, Jean-Paul Sartre and others, and also delights in improvising faux text.
RICHARD WOOD, alto sax, flute and bass clarinet, resides in Los Angeles. Founding member of The And Now Ensemble, he continues to amaze southern California audiences with his intense, yet zany, performances. He has a new CD, “Not Far From Here”, for quintet and septet, which will be released this year on pfMentum.
HAL ONSERUD, bass, currently resides in Santa Barbara. A long-time player on the New York scene, his improvising collaborators include Cecil Taylor, William Parker, Bill Dixon, Vinny Golia, Jackson Krall and many others.
GARTH POWELL, percussionist extraordinaire, resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has releases out on Rastascan, Roadcone, Nine Winds, Evander, Beak Doctor and Leo, and has recorded with, among others, Jaap Blonk, John Butcher, Nels Cline, Peter Kowald, Bert Turetsky, Saadet Turkos and the London Improvisors Orchestra.
Elements Saxophone Ensemble is a new concept created by San Francisco Bay Area iconoclast saxophonist Josh Allen. Bringing together three generations of local horn players each with a unique approach to their craft.
Josh Allen has created his own personal language on the tenor saxophone, with an emphasis on polytonal and asymmetrical phrasing, as well as extending the range and sonic ability of the instrument. He does this with constant emphasis and study of the overtone series, and the generation of multiphonics from the application of this process.
Sound designer and saxophonist David Slusser uses the term "sound composition" when referring to his work, to delineate the difference between his approach and that of musical notation compositions. He has also worked as sound designer for the films of Francis Ford Coppola, David Lynch, and George Lucas -- as well as Terminator 2 and Driving Miss Daisy -- but most of his sound design work has been for television commercials. He has made music in Rubber City, with longtime Tom Waits-collaborator Ralph Carney. He and Carney first played together making free jazz in Akron, OH, in the mid-'70s. Slusser moved out to the San Francisco area in 1977 and continues to be an important part of the new music landscape.
Aram Shelton is an avant jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, improviser and composer. Originally from southeast Florida, Shelton lived in Chicago from 1999 to 2005 and currently lives in Oakland, California. In Oakland the groups Stratic, Ton Trio, These Are Our Hours, and Marches represent his music. He stays connected to Chicago through his Quartet, the Fast Citizens (Delmark), and Jason Adasiewicz' Rolldown (Cuneiform). His writing and playing is grounded in and influenced by the rich history of avant-jazz and free improvisation in America and Europe since the 1950s and has been documented through more than a dozen albums since 2003.
Rent Romus is a saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, music and performing arts producer, and community leader living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is heavily involved in exploring past the confines of standard music forms of composition and improvisations in a wide variety of musical settings. He is also focused in presenting and supporting the local experimental and avant-garde community.
