Another SJW success story, saxophonist Yosvany Terry is one of the leading lights of innovative Afro-Cuban music. He made his U.S. debut at SJW in 1995, where he was influenced by faculty members such as saxophonist Steve Coleman. Making a move to New York, Yosvanny was soon working with top jazz artists such as Roy Hargrove, Steve Coleman, Eddie Palmieri, Dave Douglass, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, and bassist Avishai Cohen. Now an internationally-recognized bandleader, Yosvany released his first solo record, Metamorphosis, to wide critical acclaim in 2006. His music blends African polyrhythms, funk, bebop, Steve Coleman-influenced polymeters, and Yoruba traditions into a sound that seems deceptively familiar. “Inattentive listeners will most likely gloss over the sophistication.” Notes All About Jazz of Metamorphosis, “because of the easy, flowing quality of the rhythms and the contemporary-sounding instrumental mix. . . .
