About

Take a trip through musical time and space with jazz pianist/composer and 2021 Guggenheim Fellow Helen Sung as she shares selections from her new album Quartet+ and shines a spotlight on women’s artistry. Featuring a double quartet, Helen’s Jazz Quartet with special guest Harlem Quartet (a classical string quartet), the album’s music is all composed by women, featuring Helen’s new arrangements of works by landmark artists including Mary Lou Williams, Geri Allen, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Carla Bley, Marian McPartland, as well as her own original compositions. Quartet+ explores points of tension and connection between the jazz and classical traditions that have shaped Helen’s artistic life, incorporating a broad range of musical techniques and aesthetics.
