Drummer / percussionist Brian Kirk has been an impactful presence on the Seattle jazz scene in a multi-faceted sort of way. His day job as a Professor of Music Theory and Percussion at Seattle Central College and his night persona as a drummer for citywide theater productions and numerous jazz dates covers a lot of musical ground. He brought a wealth of experience with him to Seattle, when he relocated here from his hometown of San Francisco. Kirk’s father, the late Dr. Willis Kirk, was a groundbreaking educator and drummer originally from Indianapolis and the fertile scene there. He brought a wealth of experience with him to Seattle, when he relocated here from his hometown of San Francisco. Kirk’s work on area theater productions has included quite a bit of mallet work, inspiring the veteran musician to take a deep dive into the vibraphone. He is joined by veteran pianist David Joyner, bassist Osama Afifi and drummer Ronnie Bishop. Kirk has established himself over time as a jazz drummer of note. While playing the vibraphone is not a complete re-invention of himself, his dedication to the instrument that has spurned his inspiration to perform live as a leader on the instrument, is a fun and interesting twist in his career.
