Trombonist David Marriott, Jr. has been at the top of the trombone depth chart in Seattle a decade or two by now, not to mention his prowess as a bonafide top-flight arranger and composer. His contributions have a tendency to somewhat fly under the radar however, largely due to the fact that he seldom performs as a leader. Not since his unique Triskaidekaband held a monthly residence at the now shuttered Tula’s have we had a genuine opportunity to witness his abilities first hand in that context. Marriott’s quintet has solid backing with pianist Ryan Burns, bassist Geoff Harper and drummer Xavier Lecouturier. Saxophonist Jory Tindall joins the trombonist on the front line, another Seattle jazz musician we seem to have brief access to. The results should be formidable considering the talent on stage, not to mention Marriott’s penchant for finding new and interesting ways to approach jazz standards, as well as his own compositional talents.
