Helen Gillet/ Skerik Trio at The Royal Room

Helen Gillet is a "mixed bag" of musical influence; she plays an "other instrument" for New Orleans musical tradition: THE CELLO. She believes music is an expression of the entire human condition. A native of the french speaking side of Belgium, she has also lived and studied in Singapore, Chicago, Madison (WI), and New Orleans: her home for the past 11 years. She performs an eclectic range of jazz, funk, rock and classical concerts in New Orleans, and tours across the United States, Western Europe and Canada. She has four self-released albums: “Newton Circus” (2009) by her French chanson band Wazozo; an instrumental jazz album “Running of the Bells” (2011) by The Helen Gillet Trio which received a four star review in Downbeat’s October 2011 issue; “Helen Gillet” a solo album (2012) which combines Gillet’s singing, cello improvisation using loop pedal, electronics and piano and her most current recording project: "Ferdinand" a live duo album with bassist James Singleton (2013).
