About The Band:
Spokane native and winner of the National Trumpet Competition, Hall has performed with jazz greats like Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, and Maria Schneider. Don’t miss this electrifying night of world-class jazz! Jared Hall is a trumpeter, composer, and educator from Spokane, Washington. A Doctor of Musical Arts graduate from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, he has studied with jazz greats like Terence Blanchard and Brian Lynch. Hall won the 2013 National Trumpet Competition – Jazz Division and has performed with Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Maria Schneider, and many others. His acclaimed albums include Influences (2024) and Seen on the Scene (2021). After performing extensively in Seattle (2015–2022), Hall returned to Spokane in 2022 as Director of Jazz Studies at Whitworth University, where he teaches and performs with The Spokane Jazz Orchestra, The Bob Curnow Band, and his quartet. Also an author and clinician, he co-wrote The Piano Grip System (2020) and presents at major jazz education conferences.
Pianist, composer, and educator Ben Markley leads the acclaimed Ben Markley Big Band, known for bold reimaginings of jazz classics. His album Ari’s Funhouse, featuring drummer Ari Hoenig, earned a DownBeat 4-star rating as one of 2022’s best albums. Markley’s compositions and arrangements have been commissioned by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia. His latest book, Cedar: The Life and Music of Cedar Walton (2023), is the definitive biography of the jazz legend. A dedicated educator, he is Chair of the Music Department at the University of Wyoming.
Jazz alto saxophonist Natalie Wagner is a dynamic performer and educator in Dallas-Fort Worth. A graduate of UNT’s Jazz Studies Master’s program, she led the One O’Clock Lab Band (2024-25) while directing the Six O’Clock Lab Band. Originally from Washington, she taught and performed extensively in Spokane before moving to Texas. Wagner has played with local big bands, adjudicated festivals, and presented masterclasses, with plans to record and tour with her own band while mentoring the next generation of jazz musicians.
Bassist Kai Wagner is a key member of the One O’Clock Lab Band at UNT, where he is pursuing a Doctorate in Jazz Studies and teaching classes. A sought-after performer in Dallas-Fort Worth, he has worked with Quamon Fowler, Stockton Helbing, and the Sundance Big Band. Wagner previously earned an M.A. in Jazz Performance from UNTand dual B.A. degrees in Jazz Studies and Psychology from Whitworth University. Also an educator, he teaches masterclasses at colleges and high schools throughout the region.
We are thrilled to have Kyle back for his second appearance at the Leavenworth Jazz Festival. Kyle toured extensively playing at the Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada, 2016), Jazz Cruise(2017, 2023), Port Au Prince Jazz Festival (Haiti, 2018), Dromos Jazz Festival (Italy 2018) Guatemala Jazz Festival (Guatemala 2019), Menorca Jazz Festival (Spain 2019), and many others. He has had the honor of performing with many esteemed artists such as, Grammy Award® winners Kurt Elling, Brian Lynch, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Paquito D’Rivera. Kyle is prolific educator have taught and performed at various jazz camps/festivals including Tonica International Jazz Festival (Guadalajara, 2016), Festival de Jazz de Antequera (Spain, 2022), and Leavenworth Jazz Festival, (Seattle, 2023). Kyle Swan has undergraduate and graduate degrees from University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. Kyle currently resides in Chicago, Illinois.
