THE MARINA ALBERO QUARTET
Raised in Barcelona, studied piano in Cuba and now a Seattle resident, Albero navigates thrillingly among Spanish, flamenco, Cuban, and jazz styles in her inventive quartet with HANS TEUBER on reeds, bassist EVAN FLORY-BARNES and drummer, JEREMY JONES. Endlessly creative as a composer and improviser, Albero is also a master of the hammered dulcimer and has received several Golden Ear Awards including best instrumentalist, concert of the year and album of the year among others.
MARINA ALBERO
Marina Albero moved to Seattle in 2015 and since then has become one of the hottest, most sought after musicians in the Northwest! An Earshot Jazz Award-Winner and Golden Ear Award Winner for her self-released, “A LIFE SOUNDTRACK”. Ms. Albero started playing music on stages as a child with her family while they toured all around the world performing iberian traditional and early music always creating new shows. In her early years she studied in Barcelona’s Conservatory (El Bruc) and later in La Havana (ISA), where she finished her classical piano degree with the great professor and pianist Mrs. Teresa Junco.
“Albero’s music is unclassifiable. Because of the melting pot of her background, many influences are audible: Catalan, Afro-Cuban, flamenco, classical, jazz. But the mix is fully blended. On piano she is an audacious, freewheeling 88-key improviser. She played her own compositions, which came from many points along her life’s itinerary, and one tune by Paco de Lucía. But the most memorable moment of the night was “Nardis.” At first it seemed like a surprising choice, but it is one of Miles Davis’ modal pieces with a “Spanish tinge.” Albero’s band killed it, in a sprawling, careening version full of many tinges, only one of which was Spanish.” - Earshot Jazz Festival Review (More Bio Here: https://www.marinaalbero.net/bio )
HANS TEUBER
Hans Teuber has been a mainstay on the Northwest jazz scene for over 25 years, working with Wayne Horvitz, Jeff Johnson, Clay Giberson, and others who lean toward progressive jazz. As the music director at Teatro Zinzanni, he is charged with creating music that plays with theatrics, that alludes to a script, that is sequenced and timed precisely. It has presented a forever changing musical landscape from show to show, a challenge Teuber embraces. One of Teuber’s bandmates at Zinzanni is sensational Barcelona-born pianist, Marina Albero. The almost telepathic musical relationship between the two is most evident, with Teuber embellishing the multiplicity of influences in Albero’s music.
“Hans Teuber has a really wise musical soul,” says Albero. “His rich and wide background nurtures every situation he is involved in, in the most humble and generous way possible. I will always feel grateful for landing in Seattle and working every night with such a master of American music.” (More Bio Here: https://www.earshot.org/project/hans-teuber-humble-generous-way-january2018/)
EVAN FLORY-BARNES
Evan Flory-Barnes, creating “nuanced, delicately woven narratives on his solo upright bass, the Emerald City virtuoso offers elegant, honest, approachable, and magical music. With deep influences in hip-hop’s boom-bat, classical music’s delicacies, and rock n’ roll’s power, Flory-Barnes is an artist who’s played many of the best musicians across North America, Europe, and Africa. Along with Hans Teuber, Flory-Barnes has been a consistently chosen, valued and creative accompanist with Marina Albero. (More Bio Here: https://www.allthingsefb.com/)
JEREMY JONES
Raised in Denver, CO, Jones moved to Seattle in 2002 and joined the diverse musical scene of the Pacific Northwest. In 2003 and 2005, he was selected to Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; an international residency program for young emerging jazz composers. He received a GRAMMY nomination in 2014 for playing drums on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis album, THE HEIST, which was nominated for Album of the Year and won in the Best Rap Album Category. “Jeremy is shredding his drum kit like a samurai…I have never seen a man play jazz drums with more intensity.” - Colorado Music Buzz Magazine (More Bio Here: https://jeremyjonesmusic.com/)
“What a great concert series and a fantastic venue! Fred is doing such an amazing service for the jazz community here…By the way, I felt perfectly comfortable and safe parking and attending this venue in Pioneer Square!” – Greta Matassa
