Nice to see SJF presenting artists from the Portland area scene, in this case, Eugene based saxophonist Idit Shner. Shner teaches at the University of Oregon and consequently, performs with the best of the Portland scene in both jazz and classical music. She has released eight titles as a leader on the Origin/OA2 label, including her latest from her band Mhondoro that explores western jazz and African folk traditions.
Shner will feature both original compositions and interpretations of standards, accompanied by a stellar lineup. Pianist Keith Brown is a fellow faculty member at U of O these days, but is familiar to Seattle audiences by his presence in touring bands passing through town. Most recently, he performed with Jazzmeia Horn at Jazz Alley, adding to a resume that includes spins with Buster Williams, Willie Jones lll and Terreon Gully among many others. His father is jazz piano great and Jazz Messenger, Donald Brown. Brown’s playing for me personally, brings the great Mulgrew Miller to mind. ...
