Kelsey Mines & Elsa Nilsson at Seattle Jazz Fellowship

Bassist Kelsey Mines seems to be everywhere on the Seattle jazz scene these days, in a remarkable variety of musical settings. Whether it be as a sideperson with Matt Jorgensen, Marina Albero and many others, or in as in this case, leading her own band, she has shown us her not only her versatility, but her ability to perform at a highly creative level. Her recent endeavors with uber talented flautist Elsa Nilsson brings up a whole new aspect of her performative persona.

Nilsson was born and raised in Sweden, but found her way to Seattle as a student at Cornish College of the Arts before permanently relocating to New York City. She has maintained a deep connection with Seattle however, exemplified by this musical relationship with Mines. In the process, she has received acclaim as one of the truly innovative voices of her instrument(s) that has come down the pike post-Nicole Mitchell. Mines and Nilsson are joined by trombonist Beserat Tafesse, Portland based drummer Machado Mijiga and first call Seattle pianist, John Hansen. Nilsson's recent stop in Seattle centered on the Esthesis Quartet with Dawn Clement. This time the spotlight is on her compositions and skillset matched with those of Mines. The results promise to be explosive.
