Roy Hargrove Quintet at Jazz Alley

The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents trumpeter, Roy Hargrove for four nights. Band members are Roy Hargrove (trumpet and flugelhorn), Justin Robinson (saxophone and flute), Sullivan Fortner (piano), Ameen Saleem (bass), and Montez Coleman (drums). Set times on Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm and 10:00pm and Sunday at 7:30pm. Doors open at 6:00pm Thursday and 5:30pm Friday through Sunday.

As a trumpeter, composer, and an arranger, Roy Hargrove has been a mainstay of the contemporary music scene in a variety of formats for nearly two decades. Since his own emergence in the late ’80s, Hargrove has proved to be an adventurous and wide-ranging artist, proudly immersed in the jazz tradition and yet continually striking out for new terrain. Hargrove has also won Grammy® Awards for two vastly different projects. In 1997, Roy’s Cuban-based band Crisol won the Best Latin Jazz Performance Grammy for the album Habana. And in 2002, Hargrove, Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker won Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Individual or Group, for their three-way collaboration Directions in Music.

Groovin' High Records released The Roy Hargrove Quintet's "Earfood" in 2008, and The Roy Hargrove Big Band's "Emergence" in 2009. Both groups have been touring extensivley in the US, Europe and Japan.

The Music world would be hard pressed to find another ambassador capable of traversing the worlds of straight ahead swingin’ and the funky underground better than Roy Hargrove.
