The seeds of The Alchemy Project harkens back to 1998 in NY, when saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka first performed together extensively. Their 2011 release INITIATION featuring their original compositions was well lauded by both international and national press including an honorable mention in the Village Voice for top ten albums of the year.
In their development as composers they were each selected to participate respectively in the first and second Jazz Composers Orchestra Intensive (JCOI) and were chosen as finalists to receive readings of their new symphonic works by the American Composers Orchestra (2012 and 2013)
The coming together of this ensemble reflects a special alchemy. Samantha Boshnack was the first Seattle musician that Tonooka met on her move to Seattle, at the recommendation of Erica Lindsay, who was Samantha's music professor at Bard College. Coincidently Samantha and Sumi Tonooka were chosen that same year in a group of 38 out of two hundred applicants to attend the JCOI the same year, where they met Salim Washington and David Arend.height="200">Added to this mix are two stellar musicians from Seattle - Max Wood and Willem De Koch.
