Richie Cole took the dying art of bebop jazz and brought it into the modern era. He demonstrated better than almost anyone that great music can be both intellectually satisfying and emotionally moving. Whether it is a soulfully slow ballad or a burning uptempo flag waiver, Cole is at his best.

Cole, who was a prominent part of the jazz community in both New York City and Los Angeles, now resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He's had a long career on the road, playing as a featured soloist with the Buddy Rich big band and then with legendary vocalist, Eddie Jefferson. In the interim he's recorded over 50 albums as well as being featured on cds with Phil Woods, Art Pepper and Sonny Stitt.

When Richie Cole began his career in the 1970's bebop was thought to be a dead and buried art form. The music had moved to both fusion and ultra modern. But Cole embraced the forefathers of modern jazz - Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker - and forged their music with a modern sensibility. Old beboppers could enjoy the foundations of his music while the new generation loved his take no prisoner spirit.

The bottom line with Richie Cole is that whatever material he is playing he is fun. He is aware of his audience and he pulls them in. An hour with Richie Cole is an experience you won't find often. And in a small and intimate club like How Art Thou, you will just be helplessly sucked in. He calls his groups alto madness and when you see him you will know why.
