The first, The Lullaby Project (2018), celebrated and explored the integral role of lullabies in the cultural identity of multi-generational Brazilian immigrant families. The second, The New Immigrant Experience (2020), was inspired by Sallesโ interviews with Dreamers, currently protected by the DACA program, who came to the US as children.
Home is Here, to be premiered at Bombyx this Sunday afternoon April 24th, is composed of eight pieces written for each of eight immigrant jazz artists who will also contribute to the studio recordings of the pieces Salles composed for them. They are Paquito DโRivera, Melissa Aldana, Chico Pinheiro, Yosvany Terry, Magos Herrera, Sofia Rei, Jacques Schwarz-Bart, and Nadje Noordhuis. Before composing each subject's piece, Salles engaged in individual conversations with them on topics including immigration, artistic vision, race, culture, and heritage.
โBravo to Felipe and the UMass Amherst Music Department for their dedication in seeing this voluminous project come to fruition!โ -Randy Brecker, jazz legend and multi-Grammy winner trumpet player.
โSalles' concepts are brought vividly to life by the nineteen-piece Interconnections Ensemble which has no trouble navigating his often intricate scores, whose essence ranges from Baroque to modern classical motifs, and from jazz to Brazilian folk music.โ -Jack Bowers, All About Jazz
โThe New Immigrant Experience might be recognized as a masterpiece in years to come, but today, its relevance adds to its impact.โ - Downbeat Magazine
