Swedish Jazz Association (SJR) is a nonprofit organization that brings together the country's jazz clubs. The Association offers support to member clubs in a variety of areas, and works in this way for jazz as a musical form in Sweden. Through collaboration with other organizations and authorities SJR tries to improve and develop jazz operations and conditions.
The over 100 jazz clubs affiliated with SJR organize around 2000 concerts annually, which through different circumstances and tastes form a broad spectrum of jazz music today. Intensive efforts are continuously being made to seek cooperation and support from municipalities, educational associations, county music foundations and sponsors. SJR’s primary mission is to support the clubs in this work while its core ambition is to prepare and present large audiences around the country with high-class jazz experiences.

In 1994, the Pulsslag (Pulsebeat) project by SJR was initiated and is held annually in collaboration with the Concerts Sweden and Swedish Radio P2. Pulsslag was created with the primary aim of helping raise the profile of Swedish jazz groups deserving of more attention. The Pulsslag group is headed by the five leading clubs in the country; Jazz Club Fasching in Stockholm, Jericho in Malmo, COOKIN' in Boras, The Studio in Umeå as well as Öbacka Jazz & Blues in Härnosand.
SJR holds an annual jazz parliament where, in addition to customary annual meeting negotiations, the state of jazz and its future is also addressed. In most recent years, jazz parliament has been used to award key individuals and initiatives as a way of stimulating the jazz community. The awards include:
Jazz County of the year
The Bassist” sculpture – This goes to an individual who in a valuable way promotes the goals and merits of the association.
Jazzkannan (Jazz Jug) - goes to a person who strives for innovation in jazz.
SJR’s Honorary prize goes to a Swedish or foreign individual for their ‘lifelong’ service to jazz.
The Swedish Jazz Association is a member of MAIS (Collaboration of Music Arrangers), which also consists of five other national non-profit organizations: Kontaktnätet (Youth Association for rock, theater, etc.), Riksförbundet Sveriges Kammarmusikarrangörer (National Association for Sweden’s Music Organizers), RiksFöreningen för Folkmusik och Dans (National Association of Folk Music and Dance), Sveriges Orkesterförbund och Riksförbundet Arrangörer av Nutida Konstmusik (Swedish Orchestra Association and National Association of Organizers of New Music). Together MAIS represents more than over 800 organizers of music events scattered across Sweden.
