About

NJW is delighted to announce the next installment in the freshly-rebooted Contemporary Jazz Series, hosted by Rahsaan Barber. The series showcases local contemporary jazz artists. Hear cutting-edge jazz in the world-class performance space at the Jazz Cave! The next concert features Chris West, a saxophonist with a long assocation with the Jazz Workshop, whose music continues to develop in new and exciting directions. Joining Chris for this performance will be Bruce Dudley (piano), Jerry Navarro (bass), and Bob Harsen (drums).

Based in Nashville, Chris West has been composing/arranging for the past 16 years. An accomplished saxophonist/flutist/woodwindist, West has been working as a freelance musician for 20 years in Nashville TN. West holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commercial Music Performance/Composition, and a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies. In 1998, his song “Dreams” was nominated for a Nashville Music Award (NAMMY), and in 2012 he had two songs in the finals of the International Songwriting Competition. His first solo album entitled “Jazzmanic” was released in 2006 and features 9 original compositions. In 2011, West released a three-album work entitled “The Surprise Trilogy”, which has been reviewed in Downbeat, Jazztimes, and many other prestigious publications, as well as received radio play throughout the US. In addition to his own original work, West has written string and horn arrangements for many Nashville based sessions, and was hired to perform on the soundtrack of the HBO movie “Boycott”. He has toured/performed/recorded with top artists such as My Morning Jacket, Brenda Lee, Charles Walker, Carrier Underwood, Johnny Reid, Dr. Lonnie Smith, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Brian Setzer, among others. Currently, West leads and composes for an experimental big band, as well as a 9 to 11 piece funky-jazz ensemble called the JunkYard Horns....
