Laura Marks sings with the same quiet intensity and sensuality that informs her paintings. Her cool, restrained style draws the listener into a shared intimacy. Coming from an artistic family, she has been singing all of her life, and was exposed to many disparate musical genres at a very early age. The music is in her blood. Coming from a musical family, visual artist and vocalist Laura Marks is celebrating the release of her debut CD, which features a tasty mix of famous standards, obscure gems, and Latin jazz selections sung in Spanish and Portuguese.
Backed by an all-star band, Marks has described the theme of the recording as “Songs that we like to play”, and she further explains, “Mark, Ross, Ben and I have played together on and off since July, 2010 and Chris and Reg joined us in 2012…57 Minutes was recorded over a two-day period, with many ‘first takes’ having been included in the project. “I wanted the recording to be as spontaneous and real as possible.”, says Laura. “I’m not aiming for perfection, because I think that perfection is boring. So often, it’s the accidents that make art interesting, as I have seen repeatedly when painting pictures. When everything is perfect, the humanity of the thing disappears, and there is nothing to engage the listener or observer”....
